Solar panel maintenance – What you need to do (and what you don’t)

Do solar panels need maintenance?

One of the biggest advantages of solar energy is how little maintenance is required. Solar panels are designed to withstand all types of weather, including rain, wind, and snow. With no moving parts, they don’t require the same attention as other home systems like HVAC or plumbing.

However, a small amount of care goes a long way in keeping your solar system performing at peak levels. Routine checks and occasional cleaning can help preserve efficiency and extend the life of your equipment.

Basic maintenance tips for homeowners

1. Keep panels clean
Dust, pollen, bird droppings, and leaves can reduce your system’s output by blocking sunlight. A simple rinse with a garden hose usually does the trick. Clean panels early in the morning or late afternoon when they’re cooler to avoid cracking the glass.

If you live in a dry or dusty area, or near lots of trees, you may need to clean your panels more often. In most climates, rain naturally rinses off debris, but occasional cleaning is still recommended to maximize output.

2. Monitor performance
Keep an eye on your system’s production through the monitoring app or portal provided by your installer. If you notice a drop in output, it could indicate a dirty panel, shading issue, or equipment problem. Many systems allow you to track performance by the hour, day, or month, giving you real-time insight into energy production.

3. Inspect visually
Check from the ground for visible debris, cracked glass, or damaged wiring. Don’t climb on your roof — if something looks off, call a pro. It’s a good idea to perform this visual check every few months or after a major storm.

When to call a professional

  • After severe weather events like hail or strong wind

  • If your inverter is showing errors or alerts

  • Every 2-3 years for a full inspection and cleaning

  • If output suddenly drops without a clear cause

  • If you see nesting animals or physical damage on panels or wires

What not to do

  • Don’t pressure wash your panels – it can damage seals and wiring

  • Don’t use harsh chemicals or abrasive brushes

  • Don’t walk on the panels – they’re strong but not meant for foot traffic

  • Don’t attempt to fix or open electrical components yourself
